Gigi is truly a little love bug! She is affectionate, sweet, eager to please and very intelligent. She enjoys chasing after a tennis ball, going on walks, and caring for her "baby" (a rubber chicken that she enjoys mothering - seriously, it's the cutest).
She exhibits classic traits to her breed, which is primarily Border Collie. She is active, though I would not describe her as “excitable.” She has good manners, and enjoys cuddle times. Given that she is an active dog, she does require daily activity, and particularly enjoys tasks that call upon her natural gift of agility. She is also extremely intelligent, and thus will require mental stimulation to keep her from getting bored.
Gigi's temperament is relatively submissive to her human companions. She would likely do very well in homes with children. She does exhibit "herding" tendencies that are classic to her breed. It would not be remarkable, for example, for you to discover during a conversation you began in the middle of the kitchen with friends, that through no conscious decision or persuasion of your own, you are suddenly all comfortably standing in a corner of the room instead of the middle where your conversation began. You will look down, and Gigi will be lying beside you, happily keeping a quiet watch. People interested in offering this dog a forever home are encouraged to do some research on the breed.
Gigi's foster family has a large, quiet female dog that she gets along with very well. The family also has a cat, and while Gigi and the cat coexist peacefully enough, the cat seems to be a source of stress to her at times. Ideally, I think Gigi would be happiest in a feline free home.
She came to CARE after her owners surrendered her at the Pittsboro animal shelter. She was a bit underweight and it seemed clear that she was not an indoor dog, but she has learned house manners quickly. She does occasionally forget to tell us if she needs to go outside and will have accidents in the house, though this is infrequent now. She has never chewed anything inappropriate and waits to be invited before joining her foster family on the sofa or in a bed. She sleeps in a crate and naps by choice in this space often.
